In spring 2009 I spent two weeks working with Sight 4 Africa, a charity promoting eye health and providing spectacles and low visual aids to people in remote areas of Uganda.
The most common cause of visual difficulty in the world is not having access to a pair of spectacles. Spectacles can allow a child to see and so be able to attend school, or allow many over 40 years of age to work or even to read again.
Uganda has a population of 31 million people and only 9 Optometrists. This was the most rewarding experience and one which I hope to repeat next year.
